Lilford Gallery in the ‘art of the City

David Lilford and his wife Dawn have been running a successful art gallery in Castle Street, Canterbury for the past 12 years. Recently they had been searching for a new home in Canterbury for their Herne Bay-based framing business, Lilford Framing, but when they viewed number 3 Palace Street their plans underwent a rapid turnaround.

"The building is one of the coolest in the city," said David. "I could immediately see the potential of the space for a super-cool art gallery, echoing the Sixties style of many of the galleries in the East End of London. I decided there and then to move the main gallery here and re-house Lilford Framing in Castle Street."

The Lilfords have built a reputation as one of the most vibrant and diverse galleries in the South, with high quality art from established artists such as Damien Hirst, Banksy, and Tracey Emin, as well as exciting up-and-coming artists such as Jonathan Stewardson, Leigh Mulley and Tim Fawcett. Business has been very good, prompting the decision to expand. David explained, “We’ve had a really good few years, bucking the recession. I think people are fed up with banks and uninspiring investments such as ISAs and shares and are looking to enjoy their money.

"More and more people are minded to buy art that is challenging, interesting or has something to say. They want to invest in something that will give them the feel-good factor and is more likely to offer a better financial return."

David moved very quickly in Palace Street, opening Lilford Gallery on Friday 13th January – barely six weeks after his first viewing. "Once I’ve made up my mind about something I don’t like to hang around! I met with the landlord, Tony Skelton, and explained what I wanted to do with the premises. We got on well and he was able to share in my vision for the new gallery. I’m very excited about the great possibilities to display art that the more spacious environment presents, along with a location right at the heart of Canterbury that will help attract new customers in to view."

Lilford Gallery is a member of the Arts Council sponsored ‘Own Art’ scheme, which means they can offer Interest Free Credit on many pieces in the gallery. If you want to find out more you can visit them at 3 Palace Street or online at www.lilfordgallery.com, or phone 01227 639086.
